Systems Implementation Project Management
The Client
Institutional Banking Division of a large Australian bank.
The Challenge
The client wanted to make International Money Transfers available to its customers via its web site. This required a complex 9 month project to custom develop the technology and integrate it with the bank’s web portal and the back end systems that process money transfers and allow customers to look up their accounts.

The implementation of this technology was the most challenging part of the project because it had many dependencies on other projects and different areas of the bank. EQuest Consulting were called upon to manage the implementation at a time when the project was experiencing delays.

How EQuest Consulting Met the Challenge
We performed a quick review of the project to identify areas of risk and gaps in project management that needed to be addressed. This is because an implementation cannot be handled in isolation, it depends on the health of the whole project to deliver its outputs on time. We took appropriate risk mitigation actions and set about establishing an integrated project schedule which included the implementation, at a level of granularity that could be tracked and managed. We also implemented standards for document management, implemented quality reviews and mandated regular team meetings.

The Benefits
Within 2 months of our involvement the project was back on track and consistently meeting its time frames. This allowed the implementation to proceed smoothly to plan, as many of the roadblocks had been removed up front by the use of professional project management.

The schedule allowed corrective action to be taken to alleviate delays, such as fast tracking tasks on the critical path. The reviews of documentation improved communication within the project team and between other parties that the project relied on, reducing rework and allowing faster issue resolution. Several key risks were mitigated which restored confidence with the sponsors and stakeholders.
