Solution Development Methodology Creation
The Client
Multinational fast moving consumer goods company.
The Challenge
Our client required a solution development methodology that would enable their IT group to engage with the Business to collaboratively develop solutions to real business problems. Rather than accepting an often reactive need for a solution to a perceived business problem, the methodology needed to force the IT and Business stakeholders to fully identify the problem to be solved, rather than attack a singular set of symptoms.

How EQuest Consulting Met the Challenge
Working with the client we initially created a methodology framework that comprised four phases:

Identify –isolating the business problem to be solved then verifying and understanding its scope.
Specify – marshalling appropriate domain and design skills to create a design for the required solution.
Build – custom development, implementation of commercially available software or a hybrid approach.
Deliver – change management and implementation steps to realise the solution.

We decomposed each phase into a number of process steps. Each process step was documented with recommended activities, tasks, dependencies and deliverables. Each activity was augmented with recommended toolsets, techniques and associated “how to” guides. We worked with the client to determine the methodology’s implementation path.

The Benefits

The methodology was developed to be non-prescriptive, enabling people to think through issues and to come up with solutions to real problems.

The process stopped the propensity of the Business Community to adopt a “Fire, Ready, Aim” method of working.

It is anticipated that this approach will reduce the number of projects in the IT group’s portfolio and allow the business to focus on the root causes of business issues rather than reacting to symptoms.

The methodology processes will increase the number of successful projects being delivered, with clearly identifiable benefits.
